The seven points of story structure

There are a lot of sites out there that give you an idea about the ingredients that make a story arc. I bumped into this video recently. I liked it so much that I wanted to share it. I'm not going to talk a lot here: just watch this video and let Dan Wells explain, since he can do it much better! Stories need structure and apparently, pretty much all of them boil down to the same thing:

  • Hook

  • Plot turn 1

  • Pinch

  • Midpoint

  • Pinch

  • Plot turn 2

  • Resolution

I have never thought about this - not actively at least, though I think this is something many writers realise unconsciously. Now I'm dissecting my own story to find my own pot turns, pinches and midpoints. I hope you'll find it useful too!

If you are interested in more tips about writing: go here. It is a list of sites I use for my story, so maybe you'll find more interesting stuff over there. I also keep a board about writing tips on pinterest.
