Online writing lectures
And they are so brilliant!
Brandon Sanderson, the author of the Mistborn series, the Way of Kings and the final novels of the Wheel of Time, also gives lectures, apparently. And guess what: you can watch them for free on YouTube!
There are quite some lecture videos of him out there, but the one I recently finished watching has quite a good audio and video quality, something not filmed in a crappy small classroom but in a decent lecture hall. You can find the whole playlist here.
IT'S A GOLDMINE OF KNOWLEDGE. The course contains 12 lectures, covering pretty much everything you need to know about (fantasy/sci-fi) writing. Building characters, worlds, plots, but also how publishing works (well, in the US...). I've read many writing 'tips' that I find to be not true at all, but not here, everything he said made sense. Maybe it's because Brandon constantly says that 'this is not a rule, it works some writers, but maybe not for you'. 12 times an one-hour video is something you need to make some time for, but it's so worth it. Don't bother watching episode 1 though, unless you want to know the entire outline of the course.
